The first cake of the year for me was for my son's 11th birthday. We saw the inspiration for this cake in the latest
American Cake Decorating magazine, and Dylan liked it so I decided to give it a try. I think it turned out pretty good, and so did Dylan.
The next cake I did was for my (former) boss' retirement party. This one was really challenging, believe it or not, but my husband and I pulled it together just in time. I never thought Lex would be helping me in the kitchen with such a project, but there he was saving the day. Here's the end result:
To explain the cake a little... My boss (Dave) was the Agriculture Commissioner/Sealer of Weights and measures. Our County's biggest Ag industry is wine grapes and the scale represents Weights and Measures. The mushrooms were just for Dave, he's an avid mushroom hunter. He's also very involved with the Audobon Society, but I'm not comfortable enough with fondant to create birds, so he got mushrooms. Here's another view:
Seeing it all clean and done is kind of surreal. It was such a messy process, and unexpectedly time consuming. Certainly worth the effort though, Dave was great to work with.
